what do boys and girls think?
This weekend some friends and I had the opportunity to leave the BYU bubble. we slept over at a friend's house and just chilled. it was so nice to get out of provo and spend time with friends. guys and girls were there and at first we had no idea what to do. so it started out with pizza, a fondu fountain and some tv. then, we decided to play catch phrase and that got lame really fast so we played truth or dare. truth or dare turned into a conversation about boys and girls in general, what they thought of the opposite sex. it was really interesting to hear what the boys had to say and their reasoning behind it was interesting. it was like we got to enter into the secret realm of boys and they got to semi-enter into the realm of girls. it was just cool to hear what each of us had to say because they think of things girls don't even think about and vice versa. boys think girls are confusing, but they are just as confusing as we are and it's really knid of funny the more i think about it. this weekend was so fun and it was nice to get away:)

Mulan
i think the Disney character I am most like is Mulan. I am like Mulan because I am chinese:) I am sporty like she is. I wouldn't go to war but if it were to prevent my old father from doing so i probably would. i would do anything for my family just like she did. I am not a girly-girl like her family was trying to get her to be in the beginning of the movie. i am not sure who i am sometimes, but in the end i always figure it out. i would want a pet dragon as my sidekick and a cricket for good luck. she has sort of a care free attitude almost like whatever happens will happen and that's me. Mulan ends up happy and saving china, i would love to do that haha. meeting the emporer another thing i would love to do. i love her friends in that movie. while they are goofy and sometimes weird you can tell they really care for Mulan and i want friends like that. i am most like mulan!!!!!

MTC
Have any of you ever volunteered at the MTC??? If not you guys should definitely do it. I went for the first time on Saturday and it was an amazing experience. The spirit is felt so strongly there and of course there is a chance that you may bump into a missionary you know. However, that's not the reason you should go... but i went on Saturday and by chance i was in a room with a missionary from Hawaii. I went with some friends and we were playing a family that had been introduced to the gospel by a memeber friend. The missionaries knocked on the door and as soon as they enter you are supposed to be in character. The missionary from Hawaii recognized me and started asking me questions but i had to relate to my play "family". I didn't know who he was and half way through the lesson his name popped into my head. I knew him through his sister because i went to high school with her and i met her brother once my sophomore year and he remembered who i was. It was a pretty neat coincidence that he just so happened to be my teacher. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been there that day. Other than that volunteering is an awesome experience and they need all the help they can get. So you should GO!!!!

Tumble Gym
LAst night for FHE we went to the Tumble Gym. Pretty much the entire first floor of boys went and some from the second. There were about 10 girls that went so we were significantly outnumbered. Once we got there the boys lined up on the runway that lead to the foam pit. They would run down jump on the trampoline and do a trick into the foam, each trying to out do the others. it was funny because our boys have a reputation of at least one person breaking something before they leave. The first time we went one of them broke their nose and another time a second boy cracked his head. Last night fortunately the only injury was a sprained ankle. It was so fun. I am not a big fan of trampolines but when we go there i am and there's a teeter totter that spins it was intense. It was a good night. We came back and celebrated my roommates birthday. It was a night of jumping and cake it's a good thing we jumped first then had cake and not the other way around... haha:)

Stamps
This weekend I went to a lot of places and by Sunday i was pooped out. On Friday night, I watched a movie with some friends just so we could reminisce about the good old days. We watched "A Goofy Movie", it was pretty fun looking into the past. After that we went to the dance at The Wilk and I got a stamp on my hand of the cougar paw in blue ink. The dance was pretty good, but then again it depends who you go with to those types of things. After that dance a few of my friends and I went to a party and I got a stamp there of a black happy face and for some reason both stamps had to be on my right hand. The party was good, especially because the DJ was flown in from Hawaii. I made my way up to the table to see if I knew who it was and at first I was like, "oh nope, i don't know him and then", then i looked back to the table and it turned out I did know him. He knows my family and all that stuff, it was pretty trippy. On Saturday, I went to the Rugby game and got a black cougar stamp on the same hand. By the end of the weekend the top of my hand was covered. This weekend was very eventful, but on Sunday it was literally, a day of rest.

IHOP
The past few weeks i have been eating out a lot. This weekend I went to Village Inn on Friday and on Saturday to IHOP. I went with a different gorup of friends from the Olive Garden fiasco. The friends I went with to both of these places I haven't seen them in almost a month so, it was nice to go to a relaxed environment and just chill. On Saturday we were actually supposed to go see PS I Love You but by the time we got there it was sold out, so we went to IHOP. Village Inn is cheaper then IHOP but IHOP has such a good philly cheese steak that i can't resist. Both of these restaurants have good service and environments that make you feel like you could stay there all night and no one will kick you out. It was nice catching up with friends and being able to relax, so it was a good weekend.

Olive Garden
On Saturday a couple of my friends and I went to Olive Garden. I've never been there in the afternoon and it was a new experience. The lighting was different and it was kind of weird not having that romantic feel but then again it was probably because i was with friends. We had the endless soup, salad and breadsticks thing and it was good. One of my friends told the waiter before he brought out the salad that she likes a lot of cheese, so like a good waiter he catered to her needs. He brought out extra extra cheese and drowned our salad in cheese even after my friend told him to stop. Now, this salad bowl wasn't just her's but the two of us around her out of the six there. I had to eat this pool of cheese because i was paying for it and was hungry so we made it throught the first bowl and he brought out the second. Other than that the afternoon was enjoyable. It was my friend's birthday so after lunch we recieved a complimentary cake. It was an entire cake not just a slice for her. We got full slices of cake, it was awesome cake with chocolate pieces all over the cake. Olive Garden was an enjoyable afternoon.

Step Up 2
This past weekend a couple of friends and I went to see Step Up 2, it was so good. The story line was not as good as the first Step Up, but the dancing was amazing. It's not the typical dancing like ballet or jazz, but it's more exciting it's hip-hop. The first StepUp had a lot of ballet incorperated in it with a mix of hip-hop but this movie was mostly hip-hop and using dance as a way to bring people together. I really liked it, it made me wish I could dance like that and it's one of those movies that right after you get out of it you want to do something they did in the movie. Well, after this movie I wanted to dance, I didn't care if it was at a club or in my room but I wanted to dance. So, that is what I did. A friend and I after the movie went back to my dorm and cranked up my ipod dock and just danced. It was a good weekend.

27 dresses
On Saturday I stayed home. I didn't get up until 1:00pm and then went back to sleep again at 3. i guess you could say i was catching up on a lot of missed sleep. I woke up at4:30 and went to the creamery to buy groceries for dinner, then went home and made it. I had a few friends over and we were trying to figure out what we should do on a Saturday night. One suggested going bowling and another suggested a movie. Because we're cheap college students we were like the movies are way to expensive and because this one friend really wanted to go he decided to buy the tickets for the 3 of us. We chose to watch 27 dresses, probably one of the cutest movies i have seen about falling in love. i kind of compare it to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, but this movie was so much cuter. For those of you who saw it you know what i'm talking about. What wasn't there to love about it? Those hideous bridesmaid dresses, Benny and the Jets, the main character's best friend. All of it made the movie so cute and fun, I would definitely see it again:)

The Weekend
This past weekend I had the opportunity to go to Pres. Hinckley's viewing and funeral. It was two of the best opportunities I have ever had in my life and I had to jump at them. We got to Salt lake at about 5pm and had to stand in line for the viewing. 4 hours outside the conference and two hours inside we finally got to see President Hinckley. Those six hours of freezing air and whipping wind was worth the two minutes we got to be that close to a prophet of our church. He looked so peaceful and happy and from this sight I knew everything was going to be okay. On Saturday, we went to the funeral. Protestors were of course outside, but the spirit was so strong they were not able to take away from the experience. Flowers and bouquets lined the stage and as President Hinckley and his family arrived all went quiet. His casket was beautiful and the roses laid on them were beautiful as well. President Monson conducted the meeting and I could just tell that he was ready to be the next president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Talks, music and slideshows were amazing and the spirit just uplifted everyone there. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to go and will never regret a thing.

President Hinckley

As all of you know Pres. Hinckley passed away on Sunday. I had been talking about him the night before with a few friends and found it hard to believe that someone so special could be gone so quickly, even if he was 97 years old. I remember finding out he passed away and at first I guess you could say I was struck dumb. I didn't want to believe he was really gone. I was crying and I realized I am being selfish. He has been on this earth for 97 years and he was finally put out of his misery and called home why would I want him to remain here? President Hinckley, has helped the church to progress so much and I am so grateful for his love and example he had for the Saints. He especially cared for the youth, he looked at our generation with such high regards and knowing that he had that much faith in us to change the world, one cannot help but believe him and do something to change. He is with his wife and our Savior, who wouldn't want that for a man who has given us so much?
So, thank you President Hinckley for all you have done for us on this Earth and all that you are doing to prepare us to meet our Savior one day.

Today's News
Today I was checking my e-mail and when I pressed the "Enter" key after I typed in the "Yahoo!" address, to my suprise, I saw that one of my favorite actors had died. Heath Ledger passed away on Tuesday and it was completly unexpected. I say unexpected because he was 28 years old and for any of us who have seen his movies he seemed like a pretty healthy guy.
His death really got me thinking of how much we take things for granted. We have no idea when it could be our time and it makes me think, "are we ready, was he ready"? Was he ready to die? My dad once told a story me a story that my grandpa had told him, he told me that we never know what could happen, we are never anywhere in the scriptures or other areas in the gospel guaranteed a tomorrow, so do the people we care about most know how much we care? Do they know how much we love them and how much we would give of ourselves for them in a moments notice? If they do not, my dad would say, "tell them now!"
It is suprising to me that the death of an actor would get me thinking so much. I think it did this because this actor was physically fit and looked healthy on the outside, of course I don't know what he did "behind the scenes", but in any case, his death made me see how much we take for granted.
I know I take for granted sometimes the opportunity to be at BYU, I take for granted the "tomorrow's" I am given, the place I live in, the people I have met, and so much more. Does Heavenly Father know how grateful I am? I think he does, but I want to make it a point to tell Him how grateful I am.

La la la la
So, I'm sitting in class and i decided to write on my blog. I don't know what I'm going to write about yet,but it's okay because this kills time. Today, I woke up at 12:00pm because I didn't get home until 3:00am, don't ask why. I am so tired, but whatever because the weekend is here in 10 minutes. I plan on sleeping and "catching up on work"... haha. So what's everybody else up to this 3-day weekend?

How We Eat
I'll be the first to admit that when I saw "How We Eat" that I thought it was going to be boring. I thought to myself "For a book that's $17.05 it better be really good". I read the first chapter or introduction and I must say I am not completely disappointed.
I like the author's writing style. One would think that if a person is writing on food it is like a critique, but that was not the case. The way Rappoport writes is interesting. The words he chose and his wording made the reading easy and understandable. His idea of trying to figure out how food affects us on different levels was interesting to me because I never really thought of food in more ways than it tastes good and is essential to survive.
I think his ideas will make the reader's rethink the ways we look at food. I look forward to this semester and trying to understand how food really affects people in more ways than we may realize.

HI
Hey Everbody,
My name is Ashley Makahilahila. I was born and raised in Hawaii on the island of O'ahu. I went to Punahou High School, if anybody knows where that is. I have four siblings and in August my oldest sister had her first child, giving me my first nephew. It was hard leaving home just because I got to go to the beach almost every weekend and just cruise with friends and family.
This is my first year at BYU and I am loving it even if snow is involved. My roommates are awesome and I was even blessed enough to have another girl from Hawaii in my dorm and no, I did not know her before we came to Utah.
I am a member of the church and thank the Lord daily for the opportunity to be at BYU. It gets hard being here without family and friends from home because I had to start over and do it alone, but I guess I was never alone because Heavenly Father helps me every step of the way. "He never said it would be easy, he only said it would be worth it".
I hope to get to know all of you and I'll talk to you all later:)
